Firing is the same as for a ceramic decal, but the tricky thing is when you are firing on to ceramics, you need to know the temperature that the glaze softens so that the iron oxide will stick to the glaze as there is no flux to help it bond. For example new bone china is around 880ºC porcelain and stoneware are higher. The only way to work out the optimum firing temperature (if the person hasn’t made the piece or doesn’t have the specification of the glaze) is to experiment, if it wipes off, fire higher, probably in increments of 50ºC. If the temperature is too high, the colour will bleed. And if too low, the colour will not set.

In other temperature scales, most laser transfer decals fire permanently onto pre-glazed ware at cone 04 when using glazes that mature at cone 6 and higher. Most glazes that mature at cone 04 will accept laser decals fired to cone 06. Most commercial decals, chinapaints and lusters fire to maturity between cone 015 and 017.
