My decal products are decorative and not dishwasher safe. Firing decals have to be used for products to be safe for food serving. Printing firing decals requires very special printing systems and cannot be done with a laser printer / inkjet printer. I don’t specialise in ‘how iron-oxide printing works’ but all I can tell you is I have quite a few customers produce firing decals using a HP laser printer, the Bel Type decal paper and a kiln (for firing at 800+C). You can google this to find more detailed information.

You can use clear decal paper if the surface colour of your item is white or bright coloured, or need to use white decal paper and cut very precisely if the surface colour is dark.

You need to verify if your printer can handle 200gsm or thicker paper because waterslide decal paper is a lot thicker than normal paper. The backing paper itself is 170gsm and it will be around 200gsm including the decal film etc.

Both inkjet waterslide decal paper and laser waterslide decal paper will work well. Laser decal paper is easy and convenient to use but requires a reliable laser printer which can handle 200+gsm which is normally more expensive than an inkjet printer, inkjet decal paper requires one more step (spray coat) but is more cost effective.

Carefully cut your decal to shape and place it in a saucer of cold water and leave to soak for 30 seconds or so, until the decal has released from the backing paper. Do not try to “force” (forcefully slide) the decal from the backing paper until it has fully released as this may stretch the varnish or cause it to break. Slide the decal off the backing paper directly onto the surface you are applying it to. For larger decals it can be easier to slide the edge of the decal off the sheet first and then, whilst holding it in position, pull the backing paper away from underneath. Whilst the decal is still wet manoeuver it into its final resting position, ensuring that you have worked any air bubbles out to the edges. Using kitchen towel or soft tissue, carefully squeegee out any remaining bubbles and wipe away excess water and leave to dry for several hours in a warm place. For best results, and to ensure the decal fits snugly over bumps and complex curves, use of a decal setting solution is strongly recommended. This will also help the edges of the transfer film to blend smoothly into your paintwork. There are a few fixing solutions available online, and I have found ‘Mr. Marks Softer’ to be one of the better ones. Brush the solution onto the area where you will be applying the decal and slide the transfer over this. Then brush some setting solution over the top of the transfer using a single brush stroke as too many brush strokes may cause the inks to bleed. Don’t be alarmed if the decal wrinkles up as these wrinkles will reduce, and pull the decal down firmly to the surface when fully dried. Then, leave to dry for several hours and do not touch the decal, or the surrounding paintwork, for several hours to allow everything to fully harden. Transfers should only be applied to grease free, clean, glossy surfaces. If you require a matte finish to your model, spray over it with a suitable matte varnish after the transfer has been fitted and has dried thoroughly. As with all transfers, it is recommended that you coat them with a clear varnish after application to seal them in position and protect them indefinitely. Care needs to be taken if our decals are printed in metallic inks, as the metallic effect can be affected if you use a solvent based varnish. Water-based acrylic or 2-pack varnishes are recommended for these, but always ensure you have performed a test first to ensure there are no adverse effects to your finished piece.

It may have happened if the candles you used were too oily. Some of the options you can try are:

• use warm water (nice to do)
• use gelatine to enhance the adhesion (nice to do), FYI, some of my customers dip candles in wax after they have applied decals
• use a proper rubber squeegee and apply more pressure on the edges of decals (must do)
• use warm water (nice to do)
• apply another overcoats, especially on the edges, after the decal has completely dried

If you still have the same problem, try different brand candles.

They all are for laser printers.

In case of laser waterslide decals, just any polyurethane spray will do as long as it is crystal clear. Some of my customers use nitrocellulose as well.

If you use inkjet watreslide decal paper, you have to use clear acrylic spray. Normally we recommend ‘Crystal Clear Acrylic’ spray, White knight.

Around 1 minute should be ok. There is no harm to keep the decal paper in the water for longer time but at least 30 seconds or longer is recommended.

The thicknesses of decal film are:

• Standard Waterslide Decal Paper – 13 microns

A> In the case of inkjet waterslide decal paper, you must apply a clear acrylic spray coat to protect the ink. You don’t have to use a spray with laser waterslide decal papers, but it is still recommend to apply a polyurethane spray coat after the decal is applied & dried to strengthen the decal. It will also make the decal edges less visible.

It depends on what your preference is. If you have a laser printer and prefer a convenient product to use, laser waterslide decal paper is recommended. It seems you need to apply thicker spray coat, so apply one or two more coats at a slower pace.

In the case of inkjet waterslide decal paper, you must apply a clear acrylic spray coat to protect the ink when putting the decal in the water. Most inkjet printers use water-based ink.

We recommend a photo quality printer with a bypass tray and you have to make sure it uses dye ink and can handle 200+gsm thickness. Multi function printer (i.e. fax + photo copy + printer) is not recommended.

Yes the inkjet decal paper can be used on mirror. However, it won’t be seen vivid as images printed on white paper.

This can happen if the temperature of fusing system applied was too low. This issue can be fixed by choosing the correct paper option (i.e. Thick Glossy Photo Paper or similar) when printing.

It seems the fuser of your printer gets too hot when printing. I would suggest you to change the paper option. Try ‘thick glossy paper’ first, and if you have the same issue again, then try ‘normal paper’ which will produce lower temperature.

The candle decal paper sticks to any kind of candle surfaces very well as long as they are flat. However, as it is fragile, it is designed for small size decals and gets harder to use as the decal size gets bigger.

And if the colour of the tank is dark, you will have to use white toner/ink printer. If you don’t have one, you will have to ask someone else to print for you

Any laser printer which can handle 200gsm or thicker should be ok. However, if your budget allows, I would recommend Fuji Xerox 405D which is very reliable and heavy duty one. Sometimes you can find a special deal if you keep monitoring ebay

Most problems can happen because the temperature applied was too low or there were some air bubbles/excess water left underneath. You can fix the problems by doing the following:
* get rid of excess water and air bubbles underneath the decal film by using a proper squeegee
* dry the decal at a low temperature (i.e. 100C for 30seconds) after you have applied the film free decal to your item
* if you don’t see any bubbles or faulty spots, apply heat of at least 200C for 3 minutes or longer using a heat gun all over the decal (making sure no spots are missed)
* higher temperatures will give you better results, so apply heat until the decal film becomes slightly yellow (but stop heating before the film gets burnt)

It must be used with laser printers.

The film free decal is a decorative product, not for food serving but only for display.

I would strongly recommend the acrylic decal paper, https://drdecalmrhyde.com/shop/acrylic-laser-waterslide-decal-paper-international-customers-australia/ rather than the film free decal paper which requires 200C heat treatment. The acrylic decal paper will suit your needs as it sticks well and the edges will be almost invisible.

You need a laser printer and a laminator which can control temperature (ideally speed control as well).

The blue backing waterslide decal paper has a clear decal film layer and blue colour backing paper which enables white designs to be visible. If you print white designs on white colour backing paper, it becomes very hard to see the printed white designs.

You need a special printer such as white toner printer (i.e. OKI Pro7411WT or iColor540) to print designs which involve white colour. Otherwise you have to use white decal paper, which requires very precise cutting to look professional.

You can use white waterslide decal paper and then will have to cut very precisely to prevent it from looking bad. Otherwise you will need a special printer with white toner/ink to print a white background colour before printing other colours.

You need a RIP software (i.e. CADLink Digital Factory RIP) to print white first. Normally the standard OKI printer prints white last because it is designed to print heat transfer for t-shirts. For waterslide decals, you have to print white first then other colours on top which requires a RIP software to override the OKI printer driver

It will make the fired decals better if you make the images darker and the toner saver off on your printer setup.

You need to experiment to find out the optimum firing temperature & rate for your glaze. If the temperature is too high, the colour will bleed. And if too low, the colour will not set. Most laser transfer decals fire permanently onto pre-glazed ware at cone 04 when using glazes that mature at cone 6 and higher. Most glazes that mature at cone 04 will accept laser decals fired to cone 06. Most commercial decals, chinapaints and lusters fire to maturity between cone 015 and 017.

Iron oxide laser printing using a HP mono colour laser printer is the most cost effective way of firing decals. It requires under $1000 to start, and maintenance is easy and cost effective too. That’s why there are many home businesses that print firing decals using iron oxide decal printing. It provides mono colour (brown-ish) but some of my customers paint different colours on top manually.

Why should I use iron oxide firing decals?

Once these decals are fired on, they stay on! They are one of our most durable products and leave a natural looking product that can be washed and used freely. The iron oxide firing decal leaves behind a natural sepia colour, but you can get more creative with colours by painting with additional glaze or paint.

What surface can I print on?

Some of the best surfaces to print on are clay, glass, and glaze. The materials must withstand high temperatures. Also please ensure that you use a compatible glaze, if it starts to bubble or move at high temperatures your image will not be transferred properly.

Which printers are compatible with Iron Oxide firing decals?

Which cartridges/toner can I use?

Use HP or Canon cartridges that have Iron Oxide or Ferrite in the toner ingredients. To see if the cartridge has either of these ingredients, check the respective MDSS sites on HP or Canon. The iron oxide firing decal requires a high level of iron oxide/ferrite to get a strong red or brown image. Some MICR toners may also work, but use these with caution as they may have too much iron oxide.

What settings do I use?

• Paper Type: Heavy Paper
• Temperature: This will depend on what surface you are printing on, refer to the printing chart for advice. If the temperature is too hot, the image may fade, and if it is too cool, the image may not adhere properly and wipe off easily after firing.

The Bel type decal paper is a non-conventional waterslide decal product for ‘Iron-Oxide’ firing decal printing customers. They use HP laser printers (black toner) and fire around between 500C and 1000C (for instance, 650C rate 150C / hour) using kilns and firing temperature varies depending on products and thickness. You may need to experiment to find the optimum temperature for your product.

Low temperature results in missing spots and too high temperature causes excess metallic transfer. You can lower the temperature by adding a normal paper(s) on top of the metallic foil when laminating.

We have Shiny gold / Shiny Silver metallic decal products.

I would suggest you to try the smallest quantity rather than ordering a big packet to make sure your laminator works well with my product. As the metallic decal paper is so sensitive, you will need to find the optimum temperature using a carrier and normal copier paper. If the temperature is too high, excess metallic powder will be transferred, and if it is too low, incomplete transfer will happen. You can lower the temperature by placing plain paper sheet(s) on the top of the metallic foil when laminating.

The metallic gold/sliver decal paper is a mono colour (gold/silver) decal product and cannot be used for metallic plus other colour decals. However, please beware that you need a laser printer and a heavy duty laminator with temperature control (and speed control as well ideally) to use the metallic decal paper products.

The acrylic waterslide decal paper cling closely to any ridges or intricate surfaces and the adhesion becomes stronger as it dries. This product is specially designed for plastic models and provides thinner and more flexible decals by adopting acrylic film whereas most normal waterslide decal products use urethane film.

This product is not recommended for large scale decals (i.e. bigger than 50 x 50 mm) as it is fragile. And please don’t use it with Samsung laser printers to avoid jamming problems.

You need a special printer such as OKI white toner printer to print designs which involve white colour. Otherwise you have to use white decal paper, which requires very precise cutting to look professional.

I’d recommend you ‘Rub On Decal’ https://drdecalmrhyde.com/shop/rub-on-decal-paper-dry-decal-for-scrapbooking-leather-decal/ which is a dry decal and doesn’t need any heat treatment.
